## Photoshop Fill Patterns

This is a favorite way to recreate a pattern that doesn’t have a stock photo. This opens many more options than choosing from a pre-fabricated pattern.

Start by creating a new document with whatever size you need. Open Photoshop, choose File⇒New, and save the file.

In Photoshop, go to **Photoshop** **>** **Patterns** **(or Graphics** **>** **Patterns** ) and go to New (Figure 7-3). Make sure that New Pattern is selected and click the large plus sign to create a new pattern.

Now select the grid or paper pattern that you want to use. You can either cut it out and paste it or use the Import Pattern command (Figure 7-4).

The process of importing a pattern is pretty much the same as importing an image. Click the large plus sign to import the pattern. Photoshop offers a lot of options for specifying the pattern. You can change the color, text, and saturation, as well as change its size and resolution. Most patterns and image files that contain patterns (such as.png,.jpg, or.tif) will have the option checked to import the pattern automatically. If the pattern is already in the pattern library, it will not import it by default.

Now you can select the **pattern** you just created or imported, and you’ll see the Pattern Options dialog box (Figure 7-5). Choose the type of pattern that you want to create, and leave the Mask Color field blank.

Select your transparency color if you want to create a pattern with transparency. Also choose the Midtone Color, which represents the midtone of the pattern’s image, if you want the shadow to be a different color than the main color.

Select the Size by clicking the small triangle and then choose the size you want (Figure 7-6). For example, if you choose 5 in the Size box, you can use a photo that’s 5 inches square (

Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts for the Expressions

Photoshop Expressions are the building blocks of Photoshop. Most of them are shortcuts for commonly used actions.

Quickly open the toolbar by pressing the F (for Expression) key.

To open the Expressions palette, press the ‘T’ key or choose Menu > Expression > View > Toolbox to open the palette.

To quickly access all the tools in the palette, press the ‘A’ key to activate an action and then press ‘.’ to choose a tool.

Also, you can press the ‘S’ key to open the ‘Sketch’ panel. This panel has 3 buttons and you can use these to make selections, draw lines, or brush select.

To access all the tools in the ‘Sketch’ panel, press the ‘S’ key to open the panel. Choose a tool using the icons in the panel and press the ‘.’ key to open another tool on the expression.

While in the Expression panel, press the ‘Tab’ key to cycle through tools. Pressing ‘Tab’ twice will cycle through the tools in the palette.

If you press ‘Shift’ key and ‘Tab’ you will cycle through all tools in the palette.

When you are ready to create a new expression, press ‘Enter’ and press the ‘F’ key to make it.

To access the standard Photoshop tools, just press the ‘F’ key.

Press the ‘E’ key to enter the path tool. The path tool is used to draw outlines or paths, and is a very useful tool for editing the shape of objects.

To exit the path tool, press the ‘Esc’ key.

The ‘A’ key will activate a lasso tool for freehand selections.

To exit the lasso tool, press the ‘Alt’ key and then press the ‘left arrow’ or the ‘right arrow’ key to make a selection.

The ‘D’ key will activate the paint brush tool for making quick selections of small areas of an image.

To exit the paintbrush tool, press the ‘Alt’ key and then press the ‘left’ or ‘right arrow’ key to make a selection.

The ‘X’ key will bring up a window for drawing selections.

The “experts” have a vested interest in dismissing our parental complaints about the fact that the educational system is for sale. For those who profit from educational injustice are harder to convince than those who may well have it made but feel the real pain of the situation.
